At 1 p.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 25 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 96 per cent.
During the past hour the mean UV Index recorded at King's Park was 1. The intensity of UV radiation was low.

Though rainstorm warning has been cancelled, people should stay alert to the danger that may be brought about by river flooding.

The Thunderstorm Warning has been issued. It will remain effective until 3:00 p.m. today. Isolated thunderstorms are expected to occur over Hong Kong.

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

A southwesterly airstream is affecting the coast of Guangdong. Meanwhile, rainbands associated with Tropical Cyclone Merbok continue to affect Guangdong. Locally, more than 100 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over the territory since midnight.

Tropical Storm Merbok has weakened into a tropical depression. At noon, Merbok was centred about 190 kilometres northwest of Shantou and is forecast to move north-northeast at about 18 kilometres per hour across the southeastern part of China and further weaken.

Weather forecast for this afternoon and tonight

Cloudy with showers and a few squally thunderstorms. There will be swells. Moderate to fresh southwesterly winds, occasionally strong offshore and on high ground.

Outlook : There will still be showers in the next couple of days.

    Weather Situation:
    A southwesterly airstream is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    Tropical Storm Merbok has weakened into a tropical depression. At noon, Merbok with maximum sustained winds of about 55 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 24.5 degrees north, 115.2 degrees east. It is forecast to move north-northeast at about 18 kilometres per hour across the southeastern part of China and further weaken.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    All signals were cancelled at 11:10 a.m.

    At 11 a.m., Tropical Storm Merbok was centred about 240 kilometres north-northeast of Hong Kong (near 24.3 degrees north 115.1 degrees east) and is forecast to move north-northeast at about 18 kilometres per hour across Guangdong and weaken gradually.

    With Merbok weakening and moving away from Hong Kong, local winds moderated gradually. A southwesterly airstream is prevailing over the coast of Guangdong. There will still be occasional strong winds in some areas of the territory and swells over the sea at first. Members of the public should remain on the alert.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Tropical Storm Merbok (1702) has weakened into a Tropical Depression with central pressure 998 hectopascals. At 130300 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of two four point three degrees north (24.3 N) one one five point one degrees east (115.1 E) and is forecast to move north-northeast at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 30 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 60 nautical miles.

    No further warnings on this Tropical Depression will be issued by the Hong Kong Observatory unless re-intensification takes place.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
