Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

A southwesterly airstream is affecting the coast of Guangdong. Meanwhile, rainbands associated with Tropical Cyclone Merbok continue to affect Guangdong. Locally, a few millimetres of rainfall were generally recorded over the territory in the afternoon and rainfall even exceeded 10 millimetres over the northern part of the New Territories.

At 4 p.m., Tropical Depression Merbok was centred about 350 kilometres west-southwest of Fuzhou and is forecast to move northeast at about 15 kilometres per hour across the southeastern part of China and dissipate gradually.

Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow

Mainly cloudy with a few showers. There will be isolated thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow morning. Sunny intervals in the afternoon. Temperatures will range between 26 and 31 degrees. Moderate southwesterly winds, occasionally fresh.

Outlook : Sunny intervals on Thursday. Showers and thunderstorms in the following couple of days.

    A southwesterly airstream is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    At 4 p.m., Tropical Depression Merbok with maximum sustained winds of about 45 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 25.2 degrees north, 115.9 degrees east. It is forecast to move northeast at about 15 kilometres per hour across the southeastern part of China and dissipate gradually.

     CENTRED NEAR 24.5 DEGREES NORTH 115.2 DEGREES
     EAST AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE NORTH-NORTHEAST AT
     ABOUT 10 KNOTS ACROSS THE SOUTHEASTERN PART OF
     CHINA AND FURTHER WEAKEN.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Tropical Storm Merbok (1702) has weakened into a Tropical Depression with central pressure 998 hectopascals. At 130300 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of two four point three degrees north (24.3 N) one one five point one degrees east (115.1 E) and is forecast to move north-northeast at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 30 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 60 nautical miles.

    No further warnings on this Tropical Depression will be issued by the Hong Kong Observatory unless re-intensification takes place.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (12 Jun 2017) average ambient gamma radiation

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
