Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The subtropical ridge brought very hot weather to the southeastern part of China today. Locally, there were a few showers and thunderstorms at first. It was very hot with sunny periods during the day. Besides, the area of low pressure over the central part of the South China Sea had intensified into a tropical depression this morning. Another area of low pressure near Luzon entered the northeastern part of the South China Sea, intensified into a tropical depression and was named Roke. Roke is expected to move towards the coast of Guangdong today and tomorrow and bring unsettled weather to the region.

Weather forecast for Hong Kong (Sunday, 23 Jul 2017)

Mainly cloudy. Occasional squally showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures will range between 26 and 30 degrees. Moderate to fresh easterly winds, becoming north to northwest, occasionally strong offshore. Becoming southwest at night. There will be swells.

Outlook : Showers will ease off on Monday. Becoming fine and very hot in the following few days.

    Weather Situation:
    At 11 p.m., Tropical Depression Roke with maximum sustained winds of about 55 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 21.6 degrees north, 117.4 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about at about 18 kilometres per hour towards the coast of Guangdong. Meanwhile, the tropical depression over the seas east of Hainan Island with maximum sustained winds of about 45 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 17.9 degrees north, 111.5 degrees east. It is forecast to move northwest slowly in the general direction of Hainan Island.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

    This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

    At 11 p.m., Tropical Depression Roke was estimated to be about 340 kilometres east-southeast of Hong Kong (near 21.6 degrees north 117.4 degrees east) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour towards the coast of Guangdong.

    The circulation of Roke is small, but is edging closer to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary, posing threat to Hong Kong. The Observatory will consider issuing the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 before 6 a.m. on Sunday.

    With the approach of Roke, there will be squally showers over the coast of Guangdong and there will also be swells on Sunday. You are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    1. All small vessels including low power vessels and fishing vessels in open sea should seek shelter as soon as possible. Please take any precautions necessary for small vessels and secure them properly with moorings.

    2. Some precautions against damage should be taken now, gutters and drains should be cleared of obstructions. Hinges, bolts, locks and shutters of windows and doors should be checked.

    3. If you are planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, any of the off-shore islands or remote parts of Hong Kong, you are reminded that changes in weather may affect your plans.

    4. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 221200 UTC, Tropical Depression over the seas east of Hainan Island with central pressure 1002 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of one seven point nine degrees north (17.9 N) one one one point four degrees east (111.4 E) and is forecast to move northwest slowly for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 25 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 90 nautical miles.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 221200 UTC, Tropical Depression Roke (1707) with central pressure 998 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two one point six degrees north (21.6 N) one one seven point nine degrees east (117.9 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 30 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 60 nautical miles.

    Forecast position and intensity at 231200 UTC
    Two three point one degrees north (23.1 N)
    One one two point three degrees east (112.3 E)
    Maximum winds 25 knots.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (21 Jul 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.07 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
