Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

Showers are affecting the south China coast.

At 5 a.m., Severe Tropical Storm Khanun was centred about 60 kilometres north of Haikou. It is forecast to move west-southwest at about 20 kilometres per hour across Leizhou Peninsula, enter Beibu Wan and weaken. Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Lan was centred about 200 kilometres west-northwest of Yap. It is forecast to move northwest at about 15 kilometres per hour across the seas east of the Philippines and intensify gradually.

Weather forecast for today

Mainly cloudy with occasional showers. The maximum temperature will be around 28 degrees. Fresh easterly winds, occasionally strong offshore and on high ground at first. There will be swells.

Outlook : Weather will improve gradually in the next few days.

    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Shangchuan Dao. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, Nan'ao, Shanwei and south of Hong Kong.

    Weather Situation:
    A southeasterly airstream is generally affecting the south China coastal waters.

    At 5 a.m., Severe Tropical Storm Khanun with maximum sustained winds of about 90 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 20.6 degrees north, 110.3 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-southwest at about 20 kilometres per hour across Leizhou Peninsula, enter Beibu Wan and weaken.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Typhoon Khanun (1720) has weakened into a Severe Tropical Storm with central pressure 975 hectopascals. At 151800 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of two zero point seven degrees north (20.7 N) one one zero point nine degrees east (110.9 E) and is forecast to move west at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 60 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 90 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 60 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 150 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 120 nautical miles elsewhere.

    Dissipated over sea.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
