Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 11:45 HKT 05/Jun/2018

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

At noon, the tropical depression over the central part of the South China Sea was estimated to be about 580 kilometres south-southwest of Hong Kong (near 17.9 degrees north 111.2 degrees east) and is forecast to move north at about 12 kilometres per hour towards the vicinity of Hainan Island.

The tropical depression moved northwards steadily this morning and edged gradually towards the coast of Guangdong. It also strengthened slightly. According to the present forecast track, the tropical depression will maintain a distance of over 500 km from Hong Kong for most of today. Unless the tropical depression takes a track closer to Hong Kong or intensify significantly, the chance to issue higher signals today will not be high. The outer rain bands associated with the tropical depression are expected to bring squally showers to the territory in the next couple of days.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 1 Signal)

1. Precautions should be taken. Drains should be cleared of obstructions, and windows and doors should be checked.

2. Drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish. People in low-lying areas should take precautions against flooding.

3. Those who have duties during a tropical cyclone should now remain on call.

4. People planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, outlying islands or remote parts of Hong Kong should note that changes in weather may affect your trips.

5. There may be swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline.

6. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatorys website and mobile app for latest information on the tropical cyclone.

Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong in the past, the hourly mean ambient gamma radiation dose rate may vary between 0.06 and 0.3 microsievert per hour. (1 microsievert = 0.000001 sievert = 0.001 millisievert)
  2. Temporal variations are generally caused by changes in meteorological conditions such as rainfall, wind and barometric pressure.
  3. Spatial variations are generally caused by differences in the radioactive content of local rock and soil.
  4. The data displayed is provisional. Only limited data validation has been carried out.
