Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 20:45 HKT 07/Jun/2018

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

At 9 p.m., Tropical Storm Ewiniar was estimated to be about 260 kilometres west-southwest of Hong Kong (near 21.6 degrees north 111.8 degrees east) and is forecast to move north or north-northeast at about 10 kilometres per hour edging closer to the coastal areas in the western part Guangdong.

In the past few hours, local winds strengthened with strong winds offshore and on high ground. The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is expected to remain in force tonight.

Although Ewiniar will shortly make landfall over western part of Guangdong, its associated rainbands will bring squalls and heavy showers to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary.

The Observatory will take into account the variation of local wind strength to consider changing the tropical cyclone warning signal on Friday. The public is advised to take note of the latest weather information before leaving home on Friday.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Cheung Chau and Tap Mun were 54 and 50 kilometres per hour respectively.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 3 Signal)

1. Drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish. People in low-lying areas should take precautions against flooding.

2. Please take precautions now. Make sure objects likely to be blown away are securely fastened or taken indoors. Check if all windows and doors can be securely locked.

3. Seas are rough and there are swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and low-lying areas, and not to engage in water sports.

4. Avoid staying in areas exposed to high winds. Drivers using highways and flyovers should be alert to violent gusts.

5. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatorys website and mobile app for the latest information on the tropical cyclone.

Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong in the past, the hourly mean ambient gamma radiation dose rate may vary between 0.06 and 0.3 microsievert per hour. (1 microsievert = 0.000001 sievert = 0.001 millisievert)
  2. Temporal variations are generally caused by changes in meteorological conditions such as rainfall, wind and barometric pressure.
  3. Spatial variations are generally caused by differences in the radioactive content of local rock and soil.
  4. The data displayed is provisional. Only limited data validation has been carried out.
