    Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 5:30 a.m. on 08 June 2018

    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Shangchuan Dao. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, Nan'ao, Shanwei and south of Hong Kong.

    Weather Situation:
    The area of low pressure to the east of the Philippines has intensified into a tropical depression and was named Maliksi. At 5 a.m., Maliksi with maximum sustained winds of about 45 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 16.8 degrees north, 127.1 degrees east. It is forecast to move north at about 20 kilometres per hour across the western North Pacific. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Ewiniar with maximum sustained winds of about 65 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 22.4 degrees north, 112.0 degrees east. It is forecast to move north or north-northeast slowly towards the inland areas of western Guangdong.

    Tropical Cyclone Warnings

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

    At 7 a.m., Tropical Storm Ewiniar was estimated to be about 210 kilometres west of Hong Kong (near 22.6 degrees north 112.2 degrees east) and is forecast to move north or north-northeast slowly towards the inland areas of western Guangdong.

    In the past few hours, Ewiniar continued to move towards inland of western Guangdong. Despite this, its rainbands remain relatively well organised and are edging gradually closer to Hong Kong. The threat to the territory still exists. The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is expected to remain in force for most of this morning. Thereafter the Observatory will take into account the variation of local wind strength to consider changing the tropical cyclone warning signal.

    The rainbands associated with Ewiniar are bringing squalls and heavy showers to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary. Please stay on the alert and take note of the latest weather information before leaving home in the morning.

    In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Cheung Chau and Tap Mun were 49 and 46 kilometres per hour respectively.

    1. Drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish. People in low-lying areas should take precautions against flooding.

    2. Please take precautions now. Make sure objects likely to be blown away are securely fastened or taken indoors. Check if all windows and doors can be securely locked.

    3. Seas are rough and there are swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and low-lying areas, and not to engage in water sports.

    4. Avoid staying in areas exposed to high winds. Drivers using highways and flyovers should be alert to violent gusts.

    5. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatorys website and mobile app for the latest information on the tropical cyclone.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 072100 UTC, Tropical Storm Ewiniar (1804) with central pressure 995 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two two point four degrees north (22.4 N) one one two point zero degrees east (112.0 E) and is forecast to move north or north-northeast slowly for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 35 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles.

    Two three point six degrees north (23.6 N)
    One one two point two degrees east (112.2 E)
    Maximum winds 25 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.
