Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 04:50 HKT 17/Jul/2018

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

At 5 a.m., the tropical depression over the northeastern part of the South China Sea was estimated to be about 690 kilometres east-southeast of Hong Kong (near 19.0 degrees north 119.8 degrees east) and is forecast to move west at about 38 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea and towards the vicinity of western Guangdong and Hainan Island.

The structure of the tropical depression is small and compact, and is rather fast-moving. Based on the current forecast track, the tropical depression will maintain a distance from Hong Kong before noon. Local winds are not expected to strengthen significantly in the morning. The chance of issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 before noon is not high.

As there will be swells, members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 1 Signal)

1. Precautions should be taken. Drains should be cleared of obstructions, and windows and doors should be checked.

2. People in areas exposed to high winds or in low-lying areas should take precautions against strong winds and flooding.

3. Those who have duties during a tropical cyclone should now remain on call.

4. People planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, outlying islands or remote parts of Hong Kong should note that changes in weather may affect your trips.

5. Fishing vessels and low power vessels in open sea should seek shelter as soon as possible and be secured properly with moorings.

6. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatorys website and mobile app for latest information on the tropical cyclone.

  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong in the past, the hourly mean ambient gamma radiation dose rate may vary between 0.06 and 0.3 microsievert per hour. (1 microsievert = 0.000001 sievert = 0.001 millisievert)
  2. Temporal variations are generally caused by changes in meteorological conditions such as rainfall, wind and barometric pressure.
  3. Spatial variations are generally caused by differences in the radioactive content of local rock and soil.
  4. The data displayed is provisional. Only limited data validation has been carried out.
