Tropical Cyclone Warning

Tropical Depression over the northeastern part of South China Sea with central pressure 994 hectopascals was named as Son-Tinh. At 170000 UTC, it was centred within 90 nautical miles of one nine point three degrees north (19.3 N) one one eight point two degrees east (118.2 E) and is forecast to move west at about 22 knots for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 30 knots.

Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles.

Forecast position and intensity at 180000 UTC
One nine point five degrees north (19.5 N)
One zero eight point eight degrees east (108.8 E)
Maximum winds 35 knots.

Forecast position and intensity at 190000 UTC
Dissipated over land.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

  2. Temporal variations are generally caused by changes in meteorological conditions such as rainfall, wind and barometric pressure.
  3. Spatial variations are generally caused by differences in the radioactive content of local rock and soil.
  4. The data displayed is provisional. Only limited data validation has been carried out.
