Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 20:45 HKT 17/Jul/2018

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

At 9 p.m., Tropical Storm Son-Tinh was estimated to be about 340 kilometres south-southwest of Hong Kong (near 19.3 degrees north 113.5 degrees east) and is forecast to move west at about 35 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea and towards Hainan Island.

In the past couple of hours, local winds were strengthening and outer rain bands of Son-Tinh also brought squally showers to Hong Kong.

Based on the current forecast track, Son-Tinh will depart gradually from Hong Kong tonight and tomorrow morning. The chance of issuing the Gale or Storm Signal, No. 8 is rather low.

As seas are high and there are swells, members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Cheung Chau, Tate's Cairn and Chek Lap Kok were 56, 53 and 51 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 65, 75 and 69 kilometres per hour respectively.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 3 Signal)

1. Please complete precautions as soon as possible. Make sure objects likely to be blown away are securely fastened or taken indoors. Check if all windows and doors can be securely locked.

2. Drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish. People in low-lying areas should take precautions against flooding.

3. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatorys website and mobile app for the latest information on the tropical cyclone.

Dissipated over land.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong in the past, the hourly mean ambient gamma radiation dose rate may vary between 0.06 and 0.3 microsievert per hour. (1 microsievert = 0.000001 sievert = 0.001 millisievert)
  2. Temporal variations are generally caused by changes in meteorological conditions such as rainfall, wind and barometric pressure.
  3. Spatial variations are generally caused by differences in the radioactive content of local rock and soil.
  4. The data displayed is provisional. Only limited data validation has been carried out.
