Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

Tropical Depression Son-Tinh intensified into a tropical storm this morning. Its outer rainbands brought squally showers to the coast of Guangdong and the northern part of the South China Sea. Locally, there were sunny periods. It was very hot in the afternoon. There were squally showers and thunderstorms at night. More than 10 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over most parts of the territory. A broad trough of low pressure is expected to bring showers to the northern part of the South China Sea in the middle and latter parts of this week.

Weather forecast for Hong Kong (Wednesday, 18 Jul 2018)

Strong easterly winds, occasionally gale offshore and on high ground. Winds will moderate gradually later. Mainly cloudy with occasional squally showers and thunderstorms. There will be swells. Sunny intervals during the day. Temperatures will range between 27 and 31 degrees.

Outlook : Sunny periods and a few showers in the following couple of days.

    Weather Situation:
    At 11 p.m., Tropical Storm Son-Tinh with maximum sustained winds of about 85 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 19.2 degrees north, 112.3 degrees east. It is forecast to move west at about 35 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea and towards Hainan Island.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

    At 11 p.m., Tropical Storm Son-Tinh was estimated to be about 400 kilometres south-southwest of Hong Kong (near 19.2 degrees north 112.3 degrees east) and is forecast to move west at about 35 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea and towards Hainan Island.

    In the past few couple of hours, local winds were strengthening with occasional gales offshore and on high ground. The outer rain bands of Son-Tinh also brought squally showers to Hong Kong. The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 will remain in force for some time.

    Based on the current forecast track, Son-Tinh will depart gradually from Hong Kong on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, but seas are still rough and there are swells. Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Cheung Chau, Tate's Cairn and Star Ferry were 71, 66 and 46 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 86, 100 and 70 kilometres per hour respectively.

    1. Please complete precautions as soon as possible. Make sure objects likely to be blown away are securely fastened or taken indoors. Check if all windows and doors can be securely locked.

    2. Avoid staying in areas exposed to high winds. Drivers using highways and flyovers should be alert to violent gusts.

    3. Drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish. People in low-lying areas should take precautions against flooding.

    4. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatorys website and mobile app for the latest information on the tropical cyclone.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 171200 UTC, Tropical Storm Son-Tinh (1809) with central pressure 990 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of one nine point two degrees north (19.2 N) one one three point six degrees east (113.6 E) and is forecast to move west at about 18 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 40 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 30 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 120 nautical miles elsewhere.

    One nine point two degrees north (19.2 N)
    One zero six point seven degrees east (106.7 E)
    Maximum winds 35 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.
