Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 15:45 HKT 23/Jul/2018

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 was issued at 3:40 p.m.

This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

At 4 p.m., the tropical depression near Leizhou Peninsula was estimated to be about 450 kilometres west-southwest of Hong Kong (near 20.9 degrees north 110.1 degrees east) and is forecast to move north slowly across Leizhou Peninsula in the general direction of Guangxi.

According to the present forecast track, the tropical depression will be closest to Hong Kong around midnight tonight. Its outer rainbands will affect Hong Kong occasionally. Winds will be strong offshore and on high ground.

It is expected that the chance of general strong winds over Hong Kong is not high. The chance of issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is low.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 1 Signal)

1.Precautions should be taken now. Drains should be cleared of obstructions, and windows and doors should be checked.

2.People in areas exposed to high winds or in low-lying areas should take precautions against strong winds and flooding now.

3.Those who have duties during a tropical cyclone should now remain on call.

4.People planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, outlying islands or remote parts of Hong Kong should note that changes in weather may affect your trips.

5.There will be swells and rough sea, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline.

6.Fishing vessels and low power vessels in open sea should seek shelter as soon as possible and be secured properly with moorings.

7.Construction and property management practitioners should make sure that overhanging facilities and temporary structures outdoors are securely fastened, and should take precautionary measures.

8.Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatorys website and mobile app for latest information on the tropical cyclone.

Tropical Cyclone Warning

The tropical depression near Taiwan has weakened into an area of low pressure with central pressure 1002 hectopascals. At 230300 UTC, it was centred within 90 nautical miles of two six point six degrees north (26.6 N) one two three point three degrees east (123.3 E).

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 20 knots.

No further warnings on this area of low pressure will be issued by the Hong Kong Observatory unless regeneration takes place.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

  2. Temporal variations are generally caused by changes in meteorological conditions such as rainfall, wind and barometric pressure.
  3. Spatial variations are generally caused by differences in the radioactive content of local rock and soil.
  4. The data displayed is provisional. Only limited data validation has been carried out.
