Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 17:20 HKT 09/Aug/2018

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 was issued at 5:15 p.m.

This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

The area of low pressure over the central and northern parts of the South China Sea has intensified into a tropical depression.

At 5 p.m., the tropical depression was estimated to be about 540 kilometres south-southwest of Hong Kong (near 17.9 degrees north 111.9 degrees east) and is forecast to move north-northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour in the general direction towards the vicinity of the coast of western Guangdong to Hainan Island.

The area of low pressure over the central and northern parts of the South China Sea has intensified into a tropical depression this afternoon.

According to the present forecast track, the tropical depression will keep a distance of about 500 kilometres from Hong Kong tonight. The chance of issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is not high tonight.

The outer rain bands associated with the tropical depression will affect Hong Kong in the next couple of days. There will be occasional squally showers and thunderstorms. Winds will be occasionally strong over offshore waters and on high ground.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 1 Signal)

1. Every precaution should be taken. Objects likely to be blown away should be secured or taken indoors. Check if all windows and doors can be securely locked.

2. Drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish. People in low-lying areas should take precautions against flooding.

3. Those who have duties during a tropical cyclone should now remain on call.

4. People planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, outlying islands or remote parts of Hong Kong should note that changes in weather may affect your trips.

5. There may be swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline.

6. Fishing vessels and low power vessels in open sea should seek shelter as soon as possible and be secured properly with moorings.

7. Construction and property management practitioners should make sure that overhanging facilities and temporary structures outdoors are securely fastened, and should take precautionary measures.

8. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's website and mobile app for the latest information on the tropical cyclone.
