    Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 5:30 a.m. on 01 November 2018

    Warnings:
    Storm force winds in Nan'ao and Shanwei. Gale force winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    The northeast monsoon is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    At 5 a.m., Severe Tropical Storm Yutu with maximum sustained winds of about 105 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 19.4 degrees north, 116.9 degrees east. It is forecast to move north or north-northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour crossing the northeastern part of the South China Sea.

    Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
    North force 6 to 7, occasionally up to force 8 later.
    Occasional squally showers.
    Rough seas, becoming very rough later.

    Nan'ao and Shanwei:
    North to northeast force 8 to 9, cyclonic force 10 to 11 later.
    Frequent heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.
    High seas, becoming very high later.

    South of Hong Kong:
    North force 7 to 8, occasionally force 9.
    Heavy squally showers.
    Very rough to high seas.

    Shangchuan Dao:

    Tropical Cyclone Warnings

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

    This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

    At 7 a.m., Severe Tropical Storm Yutu was estimated to be about 410 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong (near 19.6 degrees north 116.8 degrees east) and is forecast to move north or north-northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour crossing the northeastern part of the South China Sea.

    In the past few hours, Yutu turned to a more northerly track. With the combined effect of the northeast monsoon and Yutu, winds over the coast of Guangdong are expected to strengthen gradually today. However, the chance of generally strong winds affecting Hong Kong this morning is not high. The chance of issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 before 10 a.m. is relatively low. Members of the public should pay attention to the latest weather warning bulletin before leaving home this morning.

    As there are swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 312100 UTC, Severe Tropical Storm Yutu (1826) with central pressure 980 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of one nine point four degrees north (19.4 N) one one six point eight degrees east (116.8 E) and is forecast to move north or north-northwest at about 6 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 55 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 210 nautical miles over northeast quadrant, 180 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 45 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 240 nautical miles.

    One one six point five degrees east (116.5 E)
    Maximum winds 50 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.
