Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 08:45 HKT 01/Nov/2018

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

At 9 a.m., Severe Tropical Storm Yutu was estimated to be about 400 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong (near 19.7 degrees north 116.8 degrees east) and is forecast to move north or north-northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour crossing the northeastern part of the South China Sea.

According to the present forecast track, Yutu will continue to edge closer to the coastal waters of eastern Guangdong today. With the combined effect of the northeast monsoon and Yutu, winds over the coast of Guangdong are expected to strengthen gradually this afternoon. The Observatory will consider issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 between noon and 2 p.m.

As there are swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 1 Signal)

1. Precautions should be taken. Windows and doors should be checked.

2. Those who have duties during a tropical cyclone should now remain on call.

3. Construction and property management practitioners should make sure that overhanging facilities and temporary structures outdoors are securely fastened, and should take precautionary measures.

4. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's website and mobile app for the latest information on the tropical cyclone.

  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong in the past, the hourly mean ambient gamma radiation dose rate may vary between 0.06 and 0.3 microsievert per hour. (1 microsievert = 0.000001 sievert = 0.001 millisievert)
  2. Temporal variations are generally caused by changes in meteorological conditions such as rainfall, wind and barometric pressure.
  3. Spatial variations are generally caused by differences in the radioactive content of local rock and soil.
  4. The data displayed is provisional. Only limited data validation has been carried out.
