    Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 4:30 p.m. on 01 November 2018

    Warnings:
    Storm force winds in Nan'ao and Shanwei. Gale force winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    The northeast monsoon is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    At 4 p.m., Severe Tropical Storm Yutu with maximum sustained winds of about 105 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 20.2 degrees north, 116.4 degrees east. It is forecast to move north or north-northwest at about 10 kilometres per hour crossing the northeastern part of the South China Sea.

    Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
    North force 6 to 7, occasionally force 8.
    Occasional squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Rough to very rough seas.

    Nan'ao:
    North to northeast force 9 to 10.
    Frequent heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.

    Shanwei:
    North to northeast force 9 to 10, becoming cyclonic force 11.
    Frequent heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

    At 5 p.m., Severe Tropical Storm Yutu was estimated to be about 320 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong (near 20.3 degrees north 116.4 degrees east) and is forecast to move north or north-northwest at about 10 kilometres per hour crossing the northeastern part of the South China Sea.

    According to the present forecast track, Yutu will continue to edge closer to the coastal waters of eastern Guangdong today. Strong to gale force winds are affecting that area. The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is expected to remain in force for a period of time.

    Under the influence of the northeast monsoon, Yutu will become slow-moving and gradually weaken tomorrow.

    As there are swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Tate's Cairn, Waglan Island and Sha Chau were 54, 53 and 46 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 66, 58 and 56 kilometres per hour respectively.

    1. Precautions should be taken. Make sure objects likely to be blown away are securely fastened or taken indoors.

    2. Small vessel owners should now complete all safety arrangements and return to nearby typhoon shelters.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 010600 UTC, Severe Tropical Storm Yutu (1826) with central pressure 980 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two zero point one degrees north (20.1 N) one one six point four degrees east (116.4 E) and is forecast to move north or north-northwest at about 5 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 55 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 210 nautical miles over northeast quadrant, 150 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 45 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 240 nautical miles.

    Two one point two degrees north (21.2 N)
    One one six point three degrees east (116.3 E)
    Maximum winds 35 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.
