Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 18:45 HKT 01/Nov/2018

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

At 7 p.m., Severe Tropical Storm Yutu was estimated to be about 310 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong (near 20.4 degrees north 116.4 degrees east) and is forecast to move north or north-northwest at about 8 kilometres per hour crossing the northeastern part of the South China Sea.

According to the present forecast track, Yutu will continue to edge closer to the coastal waters of eastern Guangdong tonight. Strong to gale force winds are affecting that area. The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is expected to remain in force for a period of time.

Under the influence of the northeast monsoon, Yutu will become slow-moving and gradually weaken tomorrow.

As there are swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Tate's Cairn, Sha Chau and Waglan Island were 51, 45 and 43 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 62, 51 and 50 kilometres per hour respectively.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 3 Signal)

1. Precautions should be taken. Make sure objects likely to be blown away are securely fastened or taken indoors.

2. Small vessel owners should now complete all safety arrangements and return to nearby typhoon shelters.

3. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's website and mobile app for the latest information on the tropical cyclone.

  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong in the past, the hourly mean ambient gamma radiation dose rate may vary between 0.06 and 0.3 microsievert per hour. (1 microsievert = 0.000001 sievert = 0.001 millisievert)
  2. Temporal variations are generally caused by changes in meteorological conditions such as rainfall, wind and barometric pressure.
  3. Spatial variations are generally caused by differences in the radioactive content of local rock and soil.
  4. The data displayed is provisional. Only limited data validation has been carried out.
